Coffee With The Curator
Thursday, July 19, 2018 | 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Come have breakfast and coffee with us as we learn a bit about history! Admission is just $4 and free for Museum members!
The Civil War is remembered by many Americans as large pitch battles with large columns of Yankees wearing blue uniforms engaging rebels wearing gray uniforms. Fewer people know the story of the Zouaves, flamboyant and daring men wearing equally flamboyant uniforms, who found themselves serving in opposing armies, for two very different causes. This discussion will begin with the "Zouave Craze" that swept through the country prior to the Civil War. What drew men to these units? Why did wearing flashy uniforms instill such pride in the wearer? The discussion will then lead to stories of the most famous of these units and their contributions to American History. Did these units survive the war? How practical is the Zouave uniform in the field? Finally, what is the legacy of the Zouave?
