The Aztec Empire and Spain from Aztec eyes: The Codex Mendoza
In the 1540s, Spanish colonizers in Central America commissioned the works of Aztec master painters to tell the story of the Spanish conquest as lawfully inherited according to Aztec tradition, not the illegal seizure of a foreign power in defiance of their superiors that it actually was. Though most Aztec artists so commissioned produced what they were asked to create, one master painter had other ideas. His text, now known as the Codex Mendoza, has become an invaluable record of Aztec life leading up to and during the Spanish activities in Central America.
