this month's talk - Fighting Over the Peace Treaty
How France and Turkey Went to War Over Ending World War I
The French government’s attempt to colonize southern Turkey after World War I quickly ran into trouble. Faced with Turkish resistance to colonial rule, French intelligence services denied they faced indigenous anticolonial movement and instead blamed resistance on the German and Russian Bolshevik governments manipulating Mustafa Kemal and the Turkish Nationalists.
In January 1920 Turkish Nationalists attacked French troops occupying what is now southern Turkey, beginning a war neither side wanted and both struggled to end. Faced with resistance to colonial rule, French intelligence services denied they faced an indigenous anticolonial movement and instead blamed resistance on the German and Russian Bolshevik governments manipulating Mustafa Kemal and the Turkish Nationalists. Over the course of two years, French and leaders eventually found a formula to make peace by twisting the logic of pro-escalation intelligence reports to buttress their policy of conciliation.
