Museum of World Treasures Announces New Exhibit on Ancient Egypt

WICHITA, Kan. – Museum of World Treasures proudly announces the grand opening of their exhibit titled Seeking A’aru: Journey to the Ancient Egyptian Afterlife on Jan. 11, 2025. Through a carefully curated collection of artifacts, Wichita families and tourists will feel transported to Ancient Egypt and grow a deeper understanding of funerary practices in this immersive exhibit.
The highlight of this exhibit will be a coffin once belonging to an ancient Egyptian Temple Singer named Tarutu. The Museum will be displaying two of her coffins in a four-layered case, showing how the coffins would sit inside each other. By partnering with local students and instructors from Wichita State University’s Shocker Studios, this exhibit will utilize augmented reality to bring the artifacts on display into the palm of the visitor’s hand. They will be able to take a closer look at the artifacts than ever before.
Programs Director Allie Little calls this project “the most ambitious exhibit project the Museum has achieved in the last 10 years.” Beginning with the stories told in Pyramid texts, through the tombs of ancient Egypt and concluding side-by-side with beautifully painted coffins, this exhibit will expand the visitor’s understanding of funerary practices and challenge the depiction of ancient Egyptians made famous by popular portrayals in media.
Museum of World Treasures’ extraordinary collection of Egyptian artifacts has captivated visitors since its founding in 2001. These treasures have long been a cornerstone of the museum’s exhibits, drawing visitors eager to connect with ancient history. In late 2022, Museum staff decided it was time to breathe new life into the exhibit.
The exhibit, Seeking A’aru: Journey to the Ancient Egyptian Afterlife will open on Jan. 11, 2025 and be a permanent exhibit in Museum of World Treasures.
