Cocktails With the Curator is an after-hours museum event that blends curiosity, conversation, and cocktails into one unforgettable evening. Whether you're a history aficionado or just looking for something new to do, this program offers a unique mix of engaging storytelling, relaxed socializing, and full access to Museum exhibits.
What Are "Shots of History"?
"Shots of History" are short, captivating talks delivered by Museum staff and volunteers. Each talk explores quirky, surprising, or little-known moments in history that you won’t find in textbooks or even on our exhibit labels.
What Kind of Talks Can I Expect?
Each event features four different talks, each about 15 minutes long. Topics vary widely but always lean into the unexpected—from the politics of guillotines and ancient bog bodies to rabbit invasions in Kansas and the surprising military history of Dungeons & Dragons. Some talks are humorous, others dramatic, and some are just downright strange—but they all aim to surprise, spark curiosity, and make history feel alive.
At one past event, our Education Manager Matt dyed his hair just to deliver a lecture on emo music. Another time, our Store Assistant Manager threw a (fake) fish out of a third-story window during his talk on the Defenestrations of Prague (and we caught it on camera and posted it on YouTube). These playful and surprising moments are what make Cocktails With the Curator so memorable—you truly never know what’s coming next.
What to Expect

Event Timing
Doors open at 5:00 PM. Talks usually begin around 5:30 PM. Guests are welcome to come and go throughout the evening based on their schedule.
Parking
Parking in Old Town is free, but spaces may fill quickly. Please plan to arrive early to allow time to find parking nearby.
Tickets
Admission is $7 + tax at the door and includes full access to the Museum. Museum members attend for free—just show your card or provide your name at check-in. We accept both cash and card payments.
Drinks and Snacks
Enjoy a cash bar by Xclusive Events offering cocktails, wine, beer, tea, lemonade, and other non-alcoholic drinks. Light bar snacks—like pretzels, M&Ms, and similar treats—are available to keep you fueled throughout the evening.
Atmosphere
- Seating is casual and limited. Guests are welcome to move around or explore exhibits during the talks.
- The Museum is wheelchair accessible. Let staff know at the front desk if you need any accommodations.
- Solo guests are welcome—many attendees come alone and end up meeting others who share their curiosity.
- No dress code. Come as you are and wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.
ID Requirement: Must be 21+ to purchase alcoholic beverages.
