How Early Hollywood Censorship Influenced the Language of Film
In 1934, with the rise of film as a popular medium for all ages, the federal government instituted the Hollywood Production Code, a series of rules and regulations to ensure American families wouldn’t be corrupted by seeing sex, drugs, and unseemly ideas on screen. Hollywood directors did not take kindly to this and almost immediately began to toe every line they could until, by 1967, the Code was effectively outdated. Join me as I walk you through some of Hollywood’s most famous moments that were born out of bending these rules and how the government’s grand plan for censorship crashed and burned.
