About the Speaker:

Myron Marcotte started working at the Carey Salt mine on August 11, 1975. He worked nights his senior year in high school while attending classes during the day. He attended college in his 40s, achieved an associate’s degree toward accounting, and was a Phi Theta Kappa member. His first day underground was in May 1976. That task was to move rail from the north end of the mine to the south. In all, he spent 13 years as a machine operator underground, 13 years as the hoist engineer, and 12 years in management including a couple of years as mine manager.

In 2013, he retired from mining and immediately went to work at Strataca - Kansas Underground Salt Museum. He is one of the few people who still has a working knowledge of all the equipment featured in the museum galleries at Strataca. He spends his time at Strataca interpreting mining term and exhibits, giving mining merit badge classes, designing exhibits, runs and rides. He has an extreme interest in the history of salt in the Hutchinson area. He is a second-generation salt worker with a working knowledge of the Carey Salt Company. Myron Marcotte is the co-author of "Kansas Tycoon Emerson Carey," alongside Lynn Ledeboer.
