Reading the Ancient Egyptians in Art and Artifact

Writing and art were inextricably linked for the ancient Egyptians. More than mere emojis, the hieroglyphic writing of the ancient Egyptians was complex, requiring grammatical knowledge and the memorization of hundreds of signs. Professor Stacy Davidson presents an overview of ancient Egyptians’ written language and the tools literate Egyptians wrote with. In a guided reading, she highlights the religiously and culturally significant offering formula which is found on a Middle Kingdom coffin in the museum’s collection as well as on countless Egyptian artifacts around the world.

SPEAKER BIO - Professor Stacy Davidson

Professor Stacy Davidson is an Egyptologist, historian, and reception scholar at Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, KS, where she teaches credit and non-credit courses in service of her goal to break down barriers of access to those interested in learning about the ancient world. She is the Team Lead and founder of the Egyptology State of the Field Project which is the first data-driven demographic, educational, and occupational analysis of Egyptologists in the United States. She is a Mellon/ACLS Community College Faculty Fellow for her project “We Are For Egypt: The History, Culture, and Legacy of Egyptian Southern Illinois" and is an Adjunct Faculty Lieberman Teaching Excellence Award, JCCC College Scholars Award, and NISOD Excellence Award recipient.
