Talk Summary

China and Taiwan: The Historical Context for Present Day Tensions

This talk will examine Taiwan’s historical relationships with a series of colonizing groups, including China, Taiwan’s contemporary views on its own sovereignty, and the claims the People’s Republic of China makes about Taiwan. The aim of the presentation is to provide a historical framework for interpreting Taiwan’s present-day predicament vis-à-vis China.

Speaker Bio - Megan Greene, PhD.

Megan Greene is professor of history and associate vice provost for international and global engagement at the University of Kansas. She is a historian of Republican China whose work has largely centered on state-led scientific development in China and on Taiwan. She has lived and studied in Taiwan and has traveled and done historical research in China. Her most recent book is Building a Nation at War: Transnational Knowledge Networks and the Development of China during and after World War II (Harvard East Asian Monographs, 2022), which focuses on Sino-American technical cooperation in the mid-twentieth century.
