Senior Wednesday: Demon Bowls and Curse Tablets

Wednesday, June 1, 2022 | 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Join us Wednesday, June 1, 2022 for our monthly Senior Wednesday. This month our topic is "Demon Bowls and Curse Tablets: Magic in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages" presented by Dr. Máire Johnson.

What did people in the ancient Mediterranean do when they wanted to punish someone who wronged them, gain a competitive advantage, or prevent malevolent entities from messing with their lives? Curse tablets and demon bowls offer a glimpse into the everyday magico-religious acts of the Greek, Roman, and Hebrew peoples of the early centuries of the Common Era.

About the speaker:

Dr. Máire (say MOY-ra or MOR-ra)  Johnson is an associate professor of premodern history at Emporia State University,  where she teaches subjects as varied as World Cultures to 1550, Religion and Culture in Ancient Egypt, Medieval Magic in Modern Culture, Ancient Greece, The Roman World, and Medieval and Early Modern Europe, to name a few.

Choose from two ways to join the presentation:

In-person: Join us at the Museum for Máire's live, in-person presentation! Refreshments provided. No need to register — simply walk in! This is free for members and $4 for non-members.

Virtually via YouTube Livestream (Members Only link will be sent the day before the program to view.)
