February's talk: “The best embassy we ever had”: Franco, Football, and Fascism
Dictator of Spain for over 30 years, Francisco Franco came to power in a violent and tumultuous manner. To help stabilize Spain following a civil war Franco utilized the most popular sport in the country to his advantage: football (soccer). This use of sport allowed Franco’s regime to be stable and uncontested for decades and built the sport in Spain up to its incredible heights we see today.
