Paleontology of a Tylosaur called 'Smoky
Ian Trevethan will discuss the process of finding and excavating a 70 million-year-old fossil marine reptile and how paleontologists uncover clues to tell the story of an unfortunate Tylosaur in the Western Interior Seaway of Kansas in the Late Cretaceous Period.
Speaker Bio - Ian Trevethan
Ian Trevethan is the Paleontology Operations Manager at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, where he oversees the Paleontology Prep Laboratory and Field Operations, Fossil ID, Museum Tours, and Paleontology Outreach. He is also part of the adjunct faculty in the Department of Geosciences at Fort Hays State University, where he teaches Paleontology Lab Techniques and Informal Public Museum Education Ian earned a Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences from Montana State University and a Master of Science in Geology from Fort Hays State University. His research interests consist of isotopic analysis of core body temperature in mosasaurs, via stable isotope geochemistry, He has also participated in geometric morphometric research projects regarding ontogeny and individual cranial variation within the extant phylogenetic bracket of the Dinosauria. Ian is committed to educating students, volunteers and the general public in all facets of paleontological and geological sciences, particularly through fossil prep training, tours, as well as public demonstrations and presentations. When not working on fossils, Ian is an avid toy collector and archivist of strange and unusual pop culture items.
