Learning About Maria von Trapp

Did you see The Sound of Music on television last night? The Museum of World Treasures has a postcard from the real Maria von Trapp on display on the third floor.

Dr. Jon, one of the Museum's founders, has stayed with the Von Trapp family several times and acquired this postcard signed by Maria von Trapp. The Sound of Music musical and movie are based on the real history of the Von Trapp family but only partially accurate. Maria von Trap did wish to become a nun, but married naval commander Georg Johannes von Trapp instead at the direction of her Mother Abbess. She reportedly wrote in her autobiography that on her wedding day she was terribly upset, both at God and at her husband, because what she really wanted was to be a nun: "I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn't love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children... I learned to love him more than I have ever loved before or after."

Visit the Museum to learn more about the Von Trapp family. The Museum is open Monday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon - 5 p.m.
