Author D. W. Carter to Speak for Final Installment of 2013 Lecture Series

At 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, the Museum of World Treasures will host Kansas historian D.W. Carter as the final installment of the Museum 2013 Lecture Series. 

 

 

Carter is a historian, author, and educator in Kansas specializing in military and social history. His book, Mayday Over Wichita, was released in August of this year. The book discusses a Wichita plane crash disaster in the year 1965.

 

“Mayday Over Wichita: The Worst Military Aviation Disaster in Kansas History tells the story of a cold Saturday morning back on January 16, 1965, when an Air Force KC-135 tanker carrying thirty-one thousand gallons of jet fuel crashed into a congested African American neighborhood in Wichita, Kansas. When the fire and destruction finally subsided, forty-seven people—mostly African American children—were dead or injured, homes were completely destroyed and numerous families were splintered.

 

Strangely, this terrible disaster has been forgotten by history. Military historian D. W. Carter provides new evidence for why the plane crashed, while examining the community’s response to the disaster in the context of Kansas’s role in the Civil Rights Movement.”
